ABSTRACT

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), the process of developing and utilizing interpersonal skills for everyday life, has become a primary vehicle for structuring students' social and emotional health in the United States and across the world. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of understanding SEL practices, is increasingly at the forefront of many discussions in education today. Since "non-academic factors" like SEL were added to U.S. education law (ESSA, 2015), the state of Florida has also added two mandates concerning SEL (Florida Senate Bill 7026: The Marjorie Stoneman Douglas Act and FS 1003.42;Rule 6A-1.094121: Curriculum mandate for four hours of SEL as part of mental health education). This has led to the adoption of SEL programming in schools. In 2018, Martin County Public Schools adopted the BASE Education learning program, an SEL approach that aimed to help high school students, identified as at-risk after a discipline infraction, to "learn about and apply psycho-social concepts through supportive, therapeutic dialogue" (MCSD Code of Conduct, Chapter V, 2022, p.18). BASE Education is an online program currently being implemented in all high schools within the Martin County School District. In purchasing BASE for implementation into the disciplinary process and SEL supports, the district projected that BASE Education would increase self-awareness and increase responsible decision making, thus decreasing discipline referrals. This study examines two components of the disciplinary experience of MCSD students: (1) The SEL experience of high school students referred to BASE Education intervention programming in the Martin County School District, and (2) How students who have participated in [personalized] BASE Education modules describe the nature of their pathway within the online experience. This study represents the first time that an analysis of the student referral experience data and online SEL intervention experiential pathway program data has been undertaken in Martin County Public Schools. ABSTRACT

The authors decided to investigate the impact of the pandemic period and the resulting limitations in Polish primary school online security education. The first part of the study investigates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on students' educational learning outcomes in information and Internet security. The study has been performed via a student-oriented survey of 20 questions. The statistical analysis confirms the significant difference before and after the pandemic in several questions at most. Nevertheless, this justifies the statement that pandemics had a positive impact on post-pandemic Internet-related security education. The second part of the study has been focused on students' perception and self-awareness of cyberspace problems. For this purpose, the authors used novel majority-based decision fusion clustering validation methods. The revealed results illustrate the positive tendency toward the students' self-awareness and self-confidence of online security problems and e-threats before, during and after the challenging pandemic period. Moreover, the presented validation methods show the appealing performance in educational data analysis, and therefore, the authors recommended these methods as a preprocessing step that helps to explore the intrinsic data structures or students' behaviors and as a postprocessing step to predict learning outcomes in different educational environments.

ABSTRACT

This past decade has been filled with significant volatility and disruption for virtually every individual, group, organization, and society on Earth. The COVID-19 pandemic has been perhaps the most significant disruptor to day-to-day life globally since the age of world wars in the mid-20th century. Although OD scholar-practitioners may have seamlessly pivoted in response to COVID-19 and embraced the shift to interacting in a "virtual" world, the challenge of how to maintain an embodied use of self during relentless disruption and constant uncertainty remained. In this article, we discuss developing an enhanced use of self and propose the practice of Holistic Embodied OD as a method of integrating our entire selves-head, heart, hands, and whole body-for effective change practice through retrospective analysis of two case studies, one pre-COVID and one during COVID-19. "Holistic Embodied OD is grounded in the development of an enhanced use of self that integrates and equally values several different elements of our lived selfexperience and relationships with others: Thinking (Head), Feeling (Heart), Doing (Hands), and Being (Whole Body)" (Matthews & Szelwach, 2021, p. 7). Practicing in this way acknowledges that the body is our way of showing up and being in the world as scholar-practitioners who engage with others as embodied social beings. Through Holistic Embodied OD, we resist disembodied OD practice by staying fully present in each situation and flexibly adjusting ourselves and our methods to help organizations and communities facilitate effective and timely change.

ABSTRACT

Emotional quotient is highly important in the current education system. The COVID-19 pandemic period has mandated the online classes among the students. The aim of this work is to analyze the characteristics of Emotional Intelligence (EI) of students during the online class learning. Totally 130 students have participated in this empirical study with interest. There are 50 questions in a self-report questionnaire with a 5-point likert scale that covers the different aspects of self-awareness, self-management, motivation, empathy and social skills. The students' responses are collected through Google form. The scores of each participant with respect to self-awareness, self-management, motivation, empathy and social skills are calculated. The descriptive statistics are applied and then Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) is performed to find the important factors. Further Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) and Bartlette' test are also made to measure the sample adequacy. From the results of the CFA, it is concluded that social skill component of EI played a major role among the students. © 2022, Rajarambapu Institute Of Technology. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

Minority communities have borne a disproportionate burden of health, social and economic consequences during the pandemic. By engaging in policy-shaping processes, social workers can contribute to the development of beneficial policies for minority communities. When working in cross-cultural environments with majorities and minorities, social workers must develop cultural competence to be effective in policy practice. Despite the importance associated with cultural competence in policy practice (CCPP), little empirical evidence exists regarding what is required of social workers in order to engage in culturally competent policy change during the pandemic. In the present study, we address this lacuna through the theoretical framework of culturally competent policy practice. Drawing on twenty-one in-depth interviews, which were conducted at two time points during the pandemic with social workers who work with ultra-Orthodox minority communities in Israel, we demonstrate that CCPP involves the combination of two perspectives—contextual and structural. These include identifying and analysing social problems from a local and global perspective, reshaping the problem through self-awareness and critical awareness of power relations, and applying cultural competence skills that reflect the unique characteristics of the communities. This article discusses the strengths and limitations of CCPP, especially when implemented in changing social and political situations.

ABSTRACT

BackgroundThe constant mutation of the coronavirus during the COVID-19 caused enough anxiety and panic, as well as a decline in an otherwise healthy economy. As the economy continued to decline, more and more people had to face the risks and anxiety associated with unemployment. Dysthymia, also known as dissociative disorder, is a complex group of psycho-physical disorders in which, during the course of the illness, the patient manifests involuntary and intermittent loss of the ability to integrate some or all of the psycho-physical functions and is unable to achieve unity in the areas of perception, memory, emotion, behavior and self-awareness.Subjects and MethodsA series of research studies were conducted to investigate the manifestation and treatment of hysteria among the unemployed as a result of the economic recession in the wake of the COVID-19. Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy was used to treat the hysterical condition of the unemployed. A self-administered questionnaire was used to investigate the mental health of the unemployed in a region before and after the epidemic. 56 valid questionnaires were returned, excluding those that were not standardized. The 56 individuals were randomly divided into two equal groups and the subjects in the experimental group were treated with rational emotive behavior therapy, while the subjects in the control group were treated with general psychotherapy. A self-administered psychological assessment scale was used to score the mental health of the subjects before and after the treatment. The scale included indicators of perception, memory, emotion, behavior and self-awareness.ResultsThe degree of self-awareness retained by the two groups of subjects under the self-awareness index was selected for analysis before and after the experiment. The results in Table 1 show that the number of subjects in the experimental group with high, low and no self-awareness were 0, 9 and 19 respectively before the rational emotive behavior treatment;after the treatment, their numbers changed to 5, 21 and 2. The use of rational emotive behavioral therapy was able to treat their hysteria phenomenon and alleviate their psychological state of low or even no self-awareness.

ABSTRACT

Burnout contributes to the emergence of numerous negative organisational phenomena. Nurses are exposed to high stress working conditions every day, making it important to study burnout among nurses in health care systems. The aim of the paper is to investigate the impact of ethical climate and the LMX relationship on burnout among nurses, as well as to examine the effects of the three moderators (gender, self-awareness and social skills among nurses) on the observed relationships. The sample consists of 326 nurses from 23 hospitals in Serbia. Standardised questionnaires were used, while correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis were employed for statistical processing. The dimensions of the ethical climate and LMX relationship have statistically significant impacts and predictive effects on the burnout dimensions. Raising the level of the ethical climate and LMX relationship positively affects burnout: it reduces emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation, and increases personal accomplishment and involvement. An adverse ethical climate and unfavourable LMX relationships among men cause greater emotional exhaustion. For nurses with high self-awareness and high social skills, a favourable ethical climate and positive LMX relationships reduce emotional exhaustion, and increase personal accomplishment. For nurses with low self-awareness and low social skills, a favourable ethical climate and positive LMX relationships reduce depersonalisation. Recommendations are made for improving the ethical climate and LMX relationships in hospitals in Serbia.

ABSTRACT

Building on recent research in high performance mindsets and their correlation to high performing people in the workplace, academic success as well as athletic performance, this study aimed to examine the happiness of high performing people. This study examines the relationship between the noncognitive skills of self-awareness, self-discipline, internal locus of control with sport performance, growth mindset and happiness of college football players during the COVID-19 pandemic school year. Participants were 99 undergraduate college football players from four different private universities within the United States. The results indicated that year in school predicted athletic performance. The mindset skills of intrinsic motivation, grit, and hope will help student athletes to stay in their athletic programs which in turn will lead to a higher level of performance. Student athletes that trust the process and remain in the program longer will have a greater likelihood of higher athletic achievement. Year in school along with internal locus of control predict growth mindset among participants. Self-awareness and internal locus of control were significant predictors of happiness amongst participants. College athletes and college students in general need learning opportunities in the mindset skills of self-awareness and internal locus of control. These mindset skills will help them balance their busy lives, maintain a growth mindset and be happy. ABSTRACT

Using a sample of 85 counselors in training, this online, survey-based moderation study examined the relationship between shame and counselor self-efficacy using a multiple linear regression model;it also examined self-awareness, distress disclosure, and peer connectedness as potential moderators between the relationship of shame and counselor self-efficacy, utilizing the Hayes PROCESS Macro. A significant inverse relationship was indicated between shame and counselor self-efficacy. Subscales utilized to assess for self-awareness did indicate moderation between the various subscales of internalized shame and counselor self-efficacy. Distress disclosure did moderate the relationship between Embarrassment and Exposed elements of shame and Client Distress subscale of counselor self-efficacy. Peer connection did not indicate moderation as hypothesized. Age and direct client hours were utilized as covariates in this study. Younger participants tended to report higher levels of self-efficacy than older participants, while those who had more direct client hours tended to report higher counselor self-efficacy. Results from this study further expound on the idea that the negative function that shame has on self makes it harder to also hold the positive view of self that relates to counselor self-efficacy. Principles from the Dunning-Kruger effect(Kruger & Dunning, 1999) appeared to give context of results around the moderating relationship self-awareness has with counselor self-efficacy. Key implications within the study highlight the importance of addressing shame within the context of counselor education. Development and purposeful use of self-reflective activities within courses and supervision can aid in buffering the relationship shame has on efficacy in handling relationship conflicts within counseling sessions. Future directions might include more focus on differences in shame found in younger and older counseling students and more development in the theory and assessment of self-awareness to account for principles outlined within the Dunning-Kruger effect. Development of a study that correlates distress disclosure scores with the amount of distress students are currently experiencing may provide fruitful information for supervision and educational development. Replication of the moderation study not during the COVID-19 pandemic may provide different results or further study identifying the benefits that connection with peers has within the counselor education process. ABSTRACT

Burnout in hospice and palliative care nurses is a growing issue, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, few studies have focused specifically on burnout in this population. A scoping review was undertaken to identify what is known about burnout among hospice and palliative care nurses, and to unify disparate findings. Analysis of eight articles revealed three overarching categories: personal factors, organizational/workplace factors, and nursing professional development factors. Each category was then divided into three cross-cutting subcategories: contributory and noncontributory factors, mitigating factors, and workplace issues. Recommendations for individuals include self-care as well as self-awareness of intrinsic characteristics that can predispose one to burnout. Within the workplace, leaders are challenged to support evidence-based practice and ongoing education. Role modeling positive communication skills, effective conflict mitigation, responsiveness, promotion of equity, and workplace commitment also help to create a culture of wellness. Nursing professional development may aid in resilience-building, and promotion of self-efficacy, self-confidence, and assertiveness. Although all identified recommendations were derived from the literature, no interventional studies have been conducted to test the effects of suggested interventions. Future research should include interventional studies as well as qualitative research to capture nuanced experiences of burnout in hospice and palliative care nurses.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified the extent to which economies in the developed and developing world rely on gig workers to perform essential tasks such as health care, personal transport, food and package delivery, and ad hoc tasking services. As a result, workers who provide such services are no longer perceived as mere low-skilled laborers, but as essential workers who fulfill a crucial role in society. The newly elevated moral and economic status of these workers increases consumer demand for corporate social responsibility regarding this stakeholder group - specifically for practices that increase worker freedom and rewards. We provide algorithmic tools for online labor platforms to meet this demand, thereby bolstering their social purpose and ethical branding while better protecting themselves from future reputational crises. To do so, we advance a managerial strategy rooted in moral self-awareness theory in order to leverage customers' virtuous self-perception and increase gig-worker freedom.

Introduction: The social and emotional health of youth is important, especially after students experience the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study was to understand the influence that the Believe In You Student Empowerment Program had on students social emotional learning (SEL) behaviors over a 10 week period during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and methods: A part of this quantitative study, one school in each the intervention and the control group (delayed intervention; 2 schools total) participated in the study. Students enrolled in physical education within each school participated (n = 166; Intervention = 88). Students in each group took a survey at week 1 (baseline measure), week 5, and week 10. Students who were in the intervention group started the program after week 1, while the delayed intervention group began the program in week 5. Results: A series of ANCOVA's examined the difference of social emotional learning knowledge and social emotional learning scales between the treatment and control groups. Self-awareness (F = 13.91, p < .01), self-management (F = 6.14, p < .01) & relationship skills (F = 5.50, p < .05) saw significant differences over time compared to the control group. The second series of analyses looked only at the intervention group and analyzed to determine significant differences in mean scores of SEL variables between weeks one and ten. Emotional regulation saw significant differences (t = 2.5, p < .01). The final set of analyses conducted were with the delayed intervention group and examined the difference in mean SEL scores over the three time periods. Again, emotional regulation saw significance with an interaction of time and gender (F = 4.162, p < .01). Discussion and Conclusion: In a short period of time, Believe in You Student Empowerment Program has shown the potential to have a positive influence on students social emotional learning behaviors, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. More research should be conducted over a longer period of time, in-person, and with an experimental design to better understand the effects of the Varsity Brands Believe in You Student Empowerment Program and its implications with student social emotional learning behaviors.

ABSTRACT

As the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic creates new challenges and opportunities, institutions of higher education have a responsibility to prepare future leaders to lead in volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environments. We propose that the emerging study of embodied leadership provides a constructive pathway for developing leaders ready for VUCA environments. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) developed the LEAD model (Learn from theory, Experience through practice, Analyze using reflection, Deepen through mentoring), which relies on integrating leadership theory, practice, and experiential learning. This leadership development framework serves as a model that can be adapted for developing embodied leadership. This paper focuses on embodied competencies and skills that align specifically with 13 leading self and leading others competencies targeted in USCGAs leadership development curriculum. We conclude with lessons learned for OD scholar-practitioners to apply in their own approaches to developing more embodied leadership, whether through the use of self as an instrument of change or for the clients they serve.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to analyse the effect of health risk perceptions on the degree of decisiveness of a person towards e-commerce (e-commerce acceptance), self-awareness towards leisure and self-awareness towards socialisation in pandemic contexts. The identified gap was related to the COVID-19 pandemic, where the development of studies inherent to this context is becoming urgent. Thus, it was necessary to understand how the health risks perceived by individuals influenced their choice regarding online shopping and, simultaneously, socialising and leisure activities. Design/methodology/approachTo reach this goal, a conceptual model was developed based on the self-determination theory, and data were collected from two countries (Portugal and Croatia). The model was estimated using the structural equation modelling (SEM). FindingsThe results showed that the perceptions regarding health risks have a positive effect on the degree of decisiveness of a person towards e-commerce acceptance and self-awareness towards socialisation. In turn, the perceptions of health risks have a positive effect on self-awareness towards leisure, not supporting the model conceptualisation. Originality/valueThe paper contributes to fill a gap in literature by analysing the simultaneous effect of individuals' e-commerce motivations for leisure and socialising activities within a pandemic context. These results have significant managerial implications for several stakeholders that must communicate to the specific public regarding this type of events.

With the advent of COVID-19, new virtual social activities arose. These activities include virtual studying, which is studying while joining a video conference. Virtual studying is different from most virtual activities in that users try to minimize unnecessary interactions while sharing their presence through video streaming. Here, video streaming that runs in the background can cause problems such as invasion of privacy and excessive self-awareness. In this paper, we aim to investigate whether a new video conferencing interface that reduces video explicitness but detects important actions can mitigate the problems of video streaming and still deliver users' presence in virtual studying. To this end, we designed a research prototype in three versions: blurred video version, small video version, and no video version. All versions were provided with an activity recognizer that detects absence, leaning, and using a smartphone. To evaluate the feasibility of the design, we conducted a user study where four virtual studying teams used all three versions of the prototype and participated in an interview. Our study explored the effects of new design strategies for virtual studying, which is a new virtual activity that focuses on sharing presence. © 2022 Owner/Author.

Identifying Areas of Need at the Graduate Level WesternU is a comprehensive graduate healthcare university with eight colleges and 27 programs enrolling approximately 3,800 students on two campuses (Pomona, California and Lebanon, Oregon). Since the university's founding, interprofessional and active support for student success has been a key theme. [...]students are more likely to rely on "what got them here" and accept certain ingrained self-concepts. Establishing the Components Needed to Meet These Needs LEAD services are available to any enrolled student, and include: academic counseling, tutoring, workshops and events, college performance committee representation, and a summer program for incoming enrolled students. Across all years and colleges with about 3,800 students, 990 students had visits, for a total of 3,203 sessions. Because of the COViD-19 pandemic, academic counseling is now offered online using Zoom rather than in-person appointments.

Video communication via platforms such as Zoom has been routinely used as a communication tool during the COVID-19 pandemic. Scientific evidence has suggested that constant video communication can have detrimental consequences such as "Zoom fatigue", inhibiting collaboration, and new information exchange. The current study focuses on the effects of using video communication technology on self-esteem, affect, and image perception under the framework of objective self-awareness (OSA). We implemented a survey among a large sample of video communication users. The results revealed a nuanced picture of OSA with video communication: merely seeing self-video and the time of using video communication won't activate OSA. However, being a listener and a part of the audience in video communication activated OSA. In turn, OSA significantly increased the attention paid to oneself, leading to critical self-evaluation, negative affect, and a greater level of cosmetic surgery acceptance. Moreover, OSA reduced the level of self-esteem. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Self-education skill is an essential skill to be improved, as well as being an important skill needed for students in schools and universities. And especially, in the covid period, the most focused skill is the self-study ability of students. The survey has been designed through surveying each group of students and individuals of each department in FPT University during the time students are studying online and at school. The research is completed using qualitative and quantitative methods. It can be concluded from the survey that, by switching to online learning platforms, the survey indicated that students improve their self-awareness and learn how to find and evaluate information sources online. However, there is still a small number of students who have problems with self-education. And this, there are causes such as weak self-perception, the guidance of teachers and mentors. The research aims to find out more available and flexible methods that give students a guide on how to improve their awareness about self - education and self - improvement after the pandemic through both direct means like quizzes and social experiments, and indirect means by reviewing written research from known authors and publishers. © 2022 IEEE.
